Check out the collection of pics I found from some of Kareena's newer photoshoots (scroll down after reading this article!). She looks beautiful and sophisticated in them, but I wonder, where's the line between looking modelesque and Bollywoodesque. Is there even a distinction anymore?
In the 1990s and before, women mainly dressed in traditional Indian clothes (saris, shalwar kameez, lenghas), and it suited them and it suited the roles they played. But somewhere in the 2000s, Bollywood began to pick-up on "westernized" culture, i.e. hip-hop, mini skirts/dresses, and crude humor--which is fine, times change. But why has it changed so much that these women seem to have forgotten the essence of being an Indian woman?
These actresses are now so far beyond their traditional self that it seems impossible for them to go back. For example, when my family saw "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi," the item song Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte, which featured a couple of different actresses and, of course, Shahrukh Khan himself), was a surprise for all of us. Why? Because Bipasha Basu was wearing traditional desi clothes (a shalwar kameez, to be exact). And the strange thing is, it just didn't suit her! We were all so used to seeing her in skimpy dresses and bikini tops. So when these women try to go back to their culture for just a moment, they fail because it's just not them anymore.
Nonetheless! Kareena's outfits are lovely (I'm not going to deny that!), and just see for yourself below.
